Chapter 17

I returned to the office, phone in my pocket. “I’m sorry, but that was work. I have to get going.”

Gem visibly tensed. “Is everything okay?”

“Fingers crossed we’ve got a break in the case.” I watched Wes’s face as I said my news, but he didn’t seem to register much of anything. Gem, however, raised his eyebrows.

“That’s great news.” He stood and gestured toward the door. “I imagine you need a ride somewhere?”

“If that’s okay.”

“I wouldn’t have offered if not. Is there anything else I can do to help?”

“You’ve done plenty,” I said. “I just need to get to the Brownley.”

“The hotel?”

“No, the circus. Yes, the hotel.”

The eyebrow that had inched up earlier went higher. “For business?”

“I’m meeting a partner there.” I held my gaze on Gem and dared him to press further. “Even though it’s none of your business.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Gem led the way outside. Bobby wasn’t at the entrance this time, which made me do a double take. I was just about to ask Gem if Bobby was on break when I caught sight of the massive truck out front. Already, several heaters had been unloaded and placed along the edge of the ruby red rope that kept the customers in line.

“Wow,” I said. “You work fast.”

“Not always.” He winked, then hooked my arm in his and pulled me through the curious crowd that leaned as an entity toward the heaters.

As we climbed into the car, Gem gave instructions to his driver to head to the Brownley, a hotel along the Mississippi River on the St. Paul side just off Highland Village.

“So, this partner—”

“He’s a fed,” I said. “End of story.”

“You’re not happy to be working with him? Tell me the movie clichés are real.”

I rolled my eyes. “It doesn’t matter if I’m happy or not. All that matters is catching a murderer.”

“I see.”

We pulled up outside of the hotel after a mostly quiet ride. Gem left me alone with my thoughts, which I desperately needed after this evening. The thought of coming face to face with Russo didn’t lighten the load any, either.

The driver finally eased to a stop after an extended twenty-minute commute. I hadn’t realized how long it’d taken us until I glanced at the time and saw it was just after midnight.

“The roads are awful,” Gem announced. “This snow isn’t going to let up until afternoon tomorrow. Let me wait and give you a ride home.”

“I can catch a cab just as easy as you can sit here.”

“I like to finish what I start.”

“Which means?”

“That I’d prefer to see you home safely.”

“I don’t know how long this will take.” I met Gem’s gaze and was surprised to find concern there. “Look, I appreciate all you’ve done, but I can handle it from here. I’m a big girl.”

He gave a thin smile. “It’s not a matter of handling it yourself; it’s about accepting help when it’s offered.”

“Well, you can afford to just buy your help when you need it. The rest of us have to fend for ourselves.
